Simply said, particle boards can be referred to as sheets made by assembling wood waste such as chips and saw dust. The process of making particle boards can be explained thus. Chips of wood or any other agro remains are made in mills and then they are dried in such a way that they are moisture free. These chips are mixed using synthetic resin and mats are made from these chips that constitute three layers. These mats are treated to around 180-degree temperature where they are pressed and cured. The resultant boards are known as particle boards. These then are cut into the required thickness and size. Particle boards are quite popular in the wood industry as it has numerous advantageous properties such as durability, surface hardness, high density, resistance to abrasion, and many more. Particle boards are available in various thicknesses and sizes.
The advantages of particle board
Availability of pre-laminated boards: This gives a variety to the look of particle board products. A thin layer of decorative laminate is pasted on to the facade of particle boards lending beauty and also strength and durability to particle boards.
They are affordable: Particle board products are cheap compared to wooden and plywood furniture.
Great to make ready-made furniture: Since particle boards are made as per the required dimensions using machines, it is quite easy to use particle boards for mass-production of furniture. It has two benefits. One, because they are mass-produced, these particle boards furniture are cheaper due to zero carpentry charge and customers do not have to wait long to get their favourite furniture home either.
Particle board is light weight: Since particle board is light-weight, furniture made from these boards are also light-weight and can be transported easily as they are not heavy. This can also reduce the furniture transportation cost.
Particle board is environmentally friendly: One of the main advantages of particle board is that it does not add to the burden of the environment as particle board is made from residues of agro and wood. Thus, making particle board helps utilise every bit of wood and other green scraps.
Termite proof: Since particle boards do not have air cavities, they do not offer living space for termites.
Can be made sound-proof: When randomly perforated, particle boards can be made sound-proof. Size availability: Another advantage of particle boards is the size. You even get particle boards with the size 12”X9”.
